Return of Salzburg cultural artifacts
Salzburg art in a European context
seit 01. February 2026
From February 2026
Ongoing exchanges with museums and collections throughout Europe enable the identification of works of art originating in Salzburg that have been lost over the centuries in various ways. Their loss is the result of historical events ranging from the export of art in the Middle Ages to liturgical and aesthetic transformations in the course of Baroqueisation and political upheavals.
Among the most significant events were the Napoleonic Wars and the resulting political changes. The return of these objects opens up the possibility of rediscovering forgotten historical connections and presenting developments in art and church history. The exhibits are distributed throughout the Museum of Mining and Gothic Art Leogang.
