Masterpieces of Furniture Art

Salzburg 1450–1500
 16. May 2026 bis 31. October 2026

The exhibition ‘Masterpieces of Furniture Art’ at the Museum of Mining and Gothic Art presents outstanding late Gothic furniture from Salzburg as a guest exhibition of the Salzburg Museum. Artfully carved, richly decorated and partially gilded originals demonstrate the high quality of craftsmanship in furniture making in the 15th century.

The centrepieces are the gilded reliquary from the Bürgerspitalskirche St. Blasius in Salzburg and a richly decorated choir stall from the pilgrimage church of St. Leonhard. Both have been made by a workshop that was active in Lungau around 1455 and may have later moved to Salzburg.

With their filigree tracery carvings, architectural forms and detailed ornaments, these pieces of furniture are among the most beautiful surviving examples of late Gothic furniture art in southern Germany. The exhibition makes it clear that these works are much more than everyday objects: they reflect religious ideas, exceptional craftsmanship and artistic exchange in 15th-century Europe.
