Mission statement
The Museum of Mining and Gothic Art Leogang on the western border of the province of Salzburg is an important private art museum and presents Gothic art and mining masterpieces of the finest quality. Twenty exhibitions with loans from European museums such as the MAK – Museum of Applied Arts Vienna and the Louvre Paris can be found in the 1,000 m² exhibition space.
The collection expresses the connection between mining and the artistic activity that flourished as a result. The end of the medieval period was the most prosperous time for mining in the Archbishopric of Salzburg, especially in Leogang. The wealth acquired led to commissions for Gothic works of art that are now world-renowned.
The museum has earned an excellent international reputation through its high-quality exhibitions, professional approach and personal communication. This is particularly reflected in the high-calibre special exhibitions organised in cooperation with Europe's largest museums. The aim of the permanent and special exhibitions is to revive historical connections, return Salzburg's cultural assets, highlight the beauty of the exhibits and bring the history behind them to life. A medieval blacksmith shop has been reactivated and a painting and carving workshop set up to provide practical instruction in arts and crafts.
