Show mine

Old mine – new impressions

In its own, very special way, one of the oldest mines in the region will be brought to life again. For a short time, you can dive into a world where miners spent a great deal of their lives working extremely hard. In the majority of show mines you are taken on a tour by train. Not with us. We want to give you an accurate impression of medieval mining. That is why you go on foot, sometimes having to stoop and in single file along the narrow tunnels. So you get a good idea of what it was really like in those days. At the same time, you can imagine how the miners of the Middle Ages dug out this system of tunnels centimetre by centimetre. An impressive experience, one that you’ll never forget. In the mine you gather round the mine’s guide, who brings history to life for you. A great deal of the tunnels, as well as the ore mining, has been arduously developed using the mallet and iron technique. At the entrance to the tunnel system, you can even find mallet marks and iron veins. Looking into the plaster shaft, you can see down to a depth of 30 metres. Here, the ore was pulled up to the main floor with a reel. The ascent over the small wooden platforms, where the miners stood or sat while at work, is also impressive. The path leads on to the „Danielstollen“ tunnel. This is where the journey through 600 years of mining history ends. Daylight again, at last. Now you deserve to try some hearty, local cuisine in the „Knappenstube“.
