Coins
Gold and silver mining was once the basis for the wealth of the archdiocese of Salzburg. The silver mined in Leogang was of such high quality that the coin masters of the Salzburg Mint used it to mint the famous Salzburg silver thaler. Other notable coins of this era were the so-called "Rübentaler", a guilder groschen minted in 1504 under Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach (1495-1519), and the Turmtaler of Prince-Bishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau (1587-1593), a rectangular coin of 1593. Finally, mention should be made of the medal to mark the consecration of Salzburg Cathedral in 1628, which was issued in the reign of Prince-Bishop Paris Graf Lodron (1619-1653). The first nickel coins to be issued in the German Empire in 1871 were made of nickel from Leogang.
